Pool construction in Costa Rica
Custom concrete and infinity pools, designed, permitted and built with your home or added to the one you have.
Projects start at $350,000 USD
A pool here is a structure, a permit and a water plan before it is a place to swim.
We design pools the way we design houses: from the topographic survey and the soil study, with engineered reinforced concrete, plumbing and drainage drawn before anything is dug. Built with a new home, the pool, deck, equipment room and terraces are planned as one. Added to an existing home, we work around what is already there.
Every pool is permitted under plans signed by our CFIA-licensed team, so it adds value to the property instead of a problem at resale.

From site check to first swim
Site and soil check
Access for machines and concrete, the slope, the soil, drainage, setbacks and where the water will come from.
Design and engineering
Shape, depths, steps and benches, an infinity edge if the view calls for one, the deck and the equipment room, drawn and engineered.
Plans and permit
Plans signed by our CFIA-licensed team and filed with the municipality, on their own or as part of your home’s permit.
Excavation and shell
Reinforced steel and structural concrete, with the plumbing, lights and returns set before the pour.
Finish and equipment
Tile, stone or plaster finishes, a saltwater or chlorine system, pumps, filtration and lighting.
Fill and handover
First fill to the water plan, start-up and balancing, and a care routine for the tropics before we hand you the keys.
Built for the coast, the sun and the dry season

Water planned first
Coastal water boards are under strain, and a strong El Niño was forecast into 2027. We plan the first fill by truck, then covers, rain capture and storage for top-ups.
Salt air and hard sun
Finishes, fittings and equipment chosen for UV and salt, with the pump room ventilated and shaded so it lasts.
Turtle beaches and neighbours
Near nesting beaches, lighting is designed low and shielded. Everywhere, we place pumps and filters where you will not hear them from the terrace.
Which pool suits your lot
Every pool we build is reinforced concrete, shaped to the site.
| Pool | Best for | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Infinity edge | Sloped lots with an ocean or jungle view | Engineered edge wall and catch basin |
| Family pool with a beach entry | Children and lounging in the shallows | A larger footprint and a wide deck |
| Lap pool | Long, narrow lots and daily swims | Length along the lot, often beside the house |
| Plunge pool | Small gardens, courtyards and villas | Compact equipment, often with a heater or cover |
| Rooftop or terrace pool | Views from the upper floor | A structure designed for the water’s weight from the start |
Concrete or fiberglass?
A fiberglass shell is trucked in and set in a day of site work, but its shape and size are fixed by the mould, and the lot needs access for a flatbed. A concrete pool takes a few weeks to build and can be shaped to the lot. That is why we build every pool in reinforced concrete, including infinity edges, beach entries and pools set into a slope.
In Costa Rica most concrete pools are built with reinforced block walls and a poured floor tied together by a crown beam, because few crews here spray gunite or shotcrete.
Fiberglass
Fixed shapes, quick to set, needs truck access to the lot.
Reinforced concrete
Any shape or depth, infinity edges and slopes, engineered with the house.
What a pool build includes
A quote for the shell alone is not a pool. Ours covers each of these.
Structure
Reinforced shell, waterproofing and the interior finish.
Machine room
Pump, filter, salt system or chlorinator and the electrical panel, in a ventilated, shaded room.
Coping and deck
The edge and a non-slip deck. Coralina stone stays cool but is porous and needs regular sealing; outdoor porcelain tile is easier to keep clean.
Drainage
Rainwater routed away from the deck and the shell.
Heating
Optional solar water heating, which suits our sun.
Start-up
First fill, balancing and a care routine before handover.
“We have had a great experience with Decentra. Their follow up skills are impeccable and they are a one stop shop for all phases of your build.”
“I engaged with Sean and the owner Sergio to obtain building costs for a residential project in the mountains of the Central Valley. I found them to be very welcoming, informative and accommodating.”
Questions about building a pool in Costa Rica
Do I need a permit to build a pool in Costa Rica?
Yes. A pool needs a municipal construction licence. Costa Rica’s construction law only lets small works skip a licensed professional, and never when the structure is involved, so a pool’s plans are signed by a CFIA-registered engineer or architect. We prepare the plans and file the permit.
Can you add a pool to a home I already own?
Yes. We first check access for the excavator and concrete truck, the soil, drainage, setbacks and where the equipment room can go, then design the pool around the house and garden you have.
Is an infinity pool possible on a steep lot?
Usually, and a slope is often the best place for one. The vanishing edge and its catch basin are a structure in their own right, so they are engineered from the soil study and the topographic survey before we quote.
How will the pool be filled if water is short in my area?
We plan the first fill by water truck so it does not draw on a local supply that is already stretched, and design covers, rain capture and storage to cut top-ups. On parts of the Guanacaste coast, local water boards had no capacity for new connections in 2024, so this is planned up front.
Are there special rules near turtle beaches?
Yes. Near nesting beaches such as Ostional by Nosara and Las Baulas at Playa Grande, lighting visible from the beach is restricted. Pool and garden lighting there is designed low, shielded and pointed away from the sand.
Saltwater or chlorine?
We usually suggest a saltwater chlorinator with a variable-speed pump: softer water, fewer chemicals to store and lower running costs. Equipment is housed in a ventilated room that keeps salt air and sun off it.
How much does a pool cost in Costa Rica?
It depends on the size, shape, site and finish, and an infinity edge or a hillside adds structure. Send us the size you have in mind and a few photos of the site on WhatsApp, and we will give you a written quote from real drawings.
How long does it take to build a pool in Costa Rica?
An experienced crew typically builds a concrete pool in about four weeks, then comes the deck and equipment. The permit can take longer than the build, so we file it early and give you a schedule with the quote.
Is a fiberglass pool a good option in Costa Rica?
It can be on a flat lot with truck access and a standard shape, though the shape and size are fixed by the mould. We build in reinforced concrete, which suits slopes, infinity edges and custom shapes.
What is the best pool deck material in Costa Rica?
It needs to be non-slip and cool underfoot. Coralina stone stays cool but is soft and porous, so it needs sealing and collects dirt and algae. Outdoor porcelain tile on a concrete base is easier to maintain. We choose with you from samples.
Can I heat a pool with solar in Costa Rica?
Yes. A solar water heater on the roof is a common way to warm a pool here. We size it and plan the piping with the equipment room.
